Okay.
Quick question.
Are any of us actually figuring this out?
And before you answer, be serious.
Because some days? I am impressed with myself.
Bills paid.
Emails answered.
Appointments remembered.
I drank water.
Actual water.
Not coffee and then water three hours later because my body started sending warning notifications.
Iâm handling things.
Very much giving responsible adult.
Then there are other days.
I walked upstairs for something.
Got upstairs.
No idea why Iâm there.
Walked back downstairs.
Remembered.
Went back upstairs.
And if that isnât adulthood, I donât know what is.
Because who told us we were grown?
I really thought there would be a point where somebody handed us the rest of the instructions.
Like maybe around 30 somebody would pull you aside and say:
âOkay, girl. You made it. Hereâs how insurance works, this is how much youâre actually supposed to have in savings, hereâs how to fold a fitted sheet, and these are the people you should stop answering.â
Nothing.
They just left us out here.
Making appointments.
Signing contracts.
Buying groceries.
Being somebodyâs emergency contact.
Emergency contact?!
Maâam, sometimes I donât answer regular calls.
Now Iâm in charge of an emergency?
Okay.
And everybody looks like they know what theyâre doing.
Thatâs the part that gets me.
You see somebody looking all put together and think:
Oh, she has it figured out.
Meanwhile she probably spent 15 minutes that morning looking for her glasses.
They were on her head.
Weâre all just doing our best.
Some of us are building careers.
Some are building businesses.
Some are raising families.
Some are starting over.
Some are healing.
Some are praying.
Some are trying to rest.
And some of us are doing several of those things at the same time.
Just handling life as it comes and hoping nobody asks us a question we were supposed to know the answer to.
And can we admit something?
I think we need to stop turning everything into a life lesson.
Sometimes there was no lesson.
Sometimes you shouldâve just stayed home.
Thatâs it.
That was the lesson.
Actually, okay.
Technically that was a lesson.
But you know what I mean.
Sometimes Tuesday was just not a good day.
Sometimes the meeting couldâve been an email.
Sometimes you werenât being âredirected.â
You missed your exit.
Please make a U-turn.
Sometimes you donât need to protect your peace.
You need to answer that email youâve been staring at since Monday.
And sometimes you absolutely need to protect your peace because you already know whatâs waiting on the other side of that text message.
Donât do it.
Put the phone down.
We have discussed this.
Maybe this IS figuring it out.
Maybe nobody wakes up one morning and suddenly knows how to do life.
Maybe we just get better at catching ourselves.
We know when something isnât working sooner.
We recover faster.
We stop explaining ourselves quite so much.
We learn which battles deserve our attention.
We learn which ones deserve absolutely nothing.
Not even a paragraph.
Especially not the paragraph you typed, deleted, typed again, sent to the group chat for review and then asked:
âShould I send this?â
No.
And you already knew we were going to say no.
Thatâs why you came here first.
So⌠welcome to Her Read On It.
And maybe thatâs why I wanted a space like this.
Not somewhere pretending we have all the answers.
We donât.
Clearly.
But somewhere we can talk about the things that happen while weâre living, working, growing, praying, resting, building, changing our minds and occasionally making a decision that absolutely should have gone through the group chat first.
Thatâs Her Read On It.
Some conversations will be funny.
Some will be a little deeper.
Some might make us think.
And some may end with:
âGirl⌠absolutely not.â
Because sometimes that really is the answer.
So no, I donât think any of us has completely figured this out.
But apparently weâre still in charge.
Which feels a little irresponsible.
Anyway.
Welcome to Her Read On It.
We have some things to talk about.
